I then came across this article by William Emeny and this one by Mr Barton, both of which have really helped us adapt the curriculum to fit our school.
One of the key additions we have made (which follows from the DTT format that PiXL advocate) has been the use of pre and post learning assessments. The instructions follow the outline in William's blog so I won't rewrite them here but essentially students sit an assessment before any teaching is done, results from this direct the teacher to focus on the key gaps (There is little in the way of post-test feedback to the students at this point - the purpose of the test is to guide learning). There is then a closing assessment after the sequence of lessons which is very similar to the original which can be used to assess the progress made. At this point students will be able to compare both assessments to see where progress has been made and be clear about which gaps still exist.
These are first drafts for section 1 - Numbers and the number system.. I will make the others available as we use them. They will be updated once we have had a chance to use them and review their impact.
Any comments / feedback would be welcomed.
Thank you to William Emeny (@Maths_M aster) for sharing his original question sheets as these borrow heavily from those. Also a big thank you to Linda Riddet-Smith who has done a big section of the writing and amending.
