This is built on a Don Steward resource, I have added in the scaffolding.
This is the follow up lesson to the one above the content is the same as we were able to spend longer than I had anticipated exploring the starter tasks. The starters have also changed as some of the students found the 'mechanical' practice too easy. Again the resources originate from Don Stewards median site.

Lesson designed for level 3 to 4 key stage 3 students. Resources collected from around the internet. The substitution top trumps will go well as a cementing activity following the 'you try' substitution slide.
These resources were produced to take to primary schools, our key stage 3 students taught children from level 2/3 up to level 6. The opening activity was the Tarsia, followed by a game of top trumps. Students then made their own top trump cards using expressions they had discovered. The closing activities have come from TES (I think). They are not my own but are freely available on the internet. I have put them in the order I used them, it is fairly obvious which is the lower/ mid and higher ability resource. The Minecraft Top Trumps have ended up with some angry bird pictures in them. Please feel free to adjust as you need. Tarsia

Assessment For the lower attaining/ very young pupils I used a calculated colouring sheet from 10 ticks that I cannot share here. If you have access to the file it is page 24 of the calculated colouring book, substituting values into expressions like a + b etc.
A consolidation 6x6 for higher Algebra, factorising, completing the square, quaratic formula and algebraic fractions.
An outcome pyramid to be used with a year 8 class. Pupils will have a copy in their books and will red/orange/green as we work through the topics. Lessons will be built around achieving the outcomes. Planned extension outcomes are written in red.
A way to monitor my medium term planning and for students to use to assess their progress. The core skills at the bottom are necessary to access the skills on the next level up and so on. I will have a copy in each student's book that for them to colour code as we work through the topics. Those skills listed in red are my planned extension topics.
I came across this lesson here http://simplifyingradicals2.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/super-mario-bros-results.html I have put together a smart board file to use with it which is included below. I think it's a fantastic idea, all the original files and movies can be downloaded from the link above.
Resources used with a mixed ability year 11 (Grade low E to high B) - all working towards securing a C.
