Pupils completed the What/Know/Learn matrix at the start of the previous lesson and will review it again at the beginning and end of this one. Most had nothing in the know column so lesson one focused on x on one side (with a little introduction to inequalities). They completed the jigsaw in class during lesson 1 so the prepare task is really a recap to make sure they remember the work we covered last lesson. To explain the short homework, the homework policy is little and often - rather than setting one long homework each week a small amount is set every lesson. The main graded task comes from the numberloving blog and they have many more like this. Pupils will work in pairs and complete the answers on post its, sticking them on the questions as they complete them. There will be copies for each person to take home for revision/ homework.

This is built on an excellent resource from Don Steward, although I have made some changes to make it fit a different audince. The initial task is to discuss common fears and issues pupils perceive they have with Algebra with the intention of making them aware that they are actually good at the 'algebra bit' but more than likely struggle with the notation. The photo's slide is to prompt discussion on where Algebra may be relevant. If algebra is the recognition of patterns, application of assumptions, trial and improvement and sticking with what works then everyone has already proved they are good at Algebra by learning to talk as a child (hence the babies photo). The clouds are interchanged with the much feared x, and the difficult question asked (but not answered) early on to allow pupils to see where they are heading and hopefully to give a seemingly impossible question that they will be able to answer by the end of the lesson.
